As the Earl left his mother, before the door was closed, he could hear her talking to the dog still on her lap. He did not doubt for an instant that he was meant to hear every word.

‘‘Well, now my companions will have something to keep them busy, Diogenes, caring for you. And isn’t it wonderful how my son Justin comes to visit, bringing me gifts, without wanting anything at all!”
